Acne Cure and Prevention

What is acne?
Acne is a disease from inflammation of oil glands in the skin mainly over the face but sometimes even affecting the chest, shoulders and back. It is characterized by pus-filled papules or cysts and comedones (also known as white heads and black heads). Acne mainly starts in teenage years, but may also manifest for the first time in adults.

What causes acne?
The most common culprit is hormones. During puberty, the increase in hormone levels will stimulate the oil glands to produce more oil. For women, hormonal changes from certain birth control pills, premenstrual changes and pregnancy can also result in acne flares.
Dead skin cells on the surface skin often lead to clogged pores. This can result in formation of closed comedones, which when infested by bacteria, form infected acne papules or nodules.

How can my acne be treated?
A good facial cleanser is important to clear blockage of the pores from dead cells. Antibiotic creams can be used to reduce the inflammation of the pimples. For more severe acne, oral medication is also prescribed. In people with oily skin and comedones, chemical peeling has proven useful. A layer of serum is applied to achieve a controlled peeling of the superficial layer of facial skin.

I had acne as a teenager and still bear the scars. Can you help?
Definitely. Laser treatment is an effective method of getting rid of scars. Patients have responded very positively to use of painless non-ablative laser. After a few treatment sessions, appearance of the scars improved, and smoothens out. Other beneficial side effects are shrinking of pore size and reduction in brown acnemarks.
